Rudaina Almomani, CBRL Amman Senior Librarian, and Eman Shahin, CBRL Amman Library and Archives Officer, attended Hashemite University’s Cultural Week of the University Library in July.

The President of the Hashemite University, Prof. Khaled Al-Hiyari, introduced the event and spoke about the importance of consolidating the culture of reading, research, and building knowledge; empowering students with the tools of critical thinking and scientific research; and fostering an openness to international experiences in preserving knowledge and developing library services.

The event launched a book fair, which included a variety of books in scientific, cultural, educational, linguistic and literary fields, and invited publishing houses with which the Library cooperates. Prof. Dr. Kifah Al-Omari, Director of the Library Unit,  talked about the value of promoting the culture of reading and scientific research and developing accessible paper and digital information resources.

Researcher Shireen Al-Dweik from the Ministry of Education stressed the importance of investing in technology to enhance the role of libraries and develop their future vision as learning centres and incubators for creativity and heritage preservation.

Rudaina and Eman presented their “The Digitalization of the Cultural Heritage of Jordan” and spoke about their experience in digitizing rare and endangered books, and documents related to the history and antiquities of Jordan and the Levant region from 1619 to 1870, and making them available to the public through the British Library and the CBRL website. They called for the continuation of digitization efforts to protect cultural and scientific memory.
