The Role of Pharmacists in Addressing Substance Use Disorders in Jordan Workshop

With generous support from the CBRL, the University of Jordan, in collaboration with the University of Bristol, organized a two-day workshop entitled “Co-Development of an Academic Network and Research Prioritisation Exercise to Study the Role of Pharmacies and Pharmacists in Substance Use Disorders in Jordan.”

The workshop was held at the CBRL Amman Institute on 17–18 September 2025 and aimed to identify research priorities and establish a sustainable academic network dedicated to advancing research on the identification and management of substance use disorders (SUDs) in Jordan.

The event was led by Dr. Jenny Scott (Bristol Medical School, UK), Dr. Roz Gittins (General Pharmaceutical Council/College of Mental Health Pharmacy, UK), and Prof. Mayyada Wazaify (School of Pharmacy, the University of Jordan). Participants included scholars from Jordan and the UK, Jordanian policy makers and regulators, practicing pharmacists, and other local experts.

Day one focused on mapping the context of substance use disorders in Jordan, exploring the current role of pharmacists, and identifying research challenges. On day two, participants engaged in a structured research prioritization exercise, using nominal group technique, resulting in the identification of the top five research priorities. Leads were appointed for each priority area, tasked with coordinating the next future meeting for their respective research clusters, with ongoing support from the wider academic network.

This collaborative effort represents an important step toward strengthening the evidence base on substance use disorders in Jordan and enhancing the role of pharmacists in prevention, identification, and management.
