Dr Jane Humphris, CBRL Director

Dr Jane Humphris took up the role of CBRL’s Interim Director in September 2024, having been the Director of the British Institute in Eastern Africa and Senior Research Associate at the McDonald Institute, University of Cambridge, since 2018.

Before she worked with the British International Research Institutes, Jane was based at UCL’s campus in Qatar for six years, where she was Head of Research in Sudan. She holds a PhD in African Archaeometallurgy and an MA in African Archaeology from UCL, and a BA in Ancient History and Archaeology from the University of Manchester.

Her research focuses on ancient iron production technologies in Africa, and in particular at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Royal City of Meroe in modern day Sudan. She has also run archaeological research projects in Ethiopia and Rwanda. In Sudan, Jane and her team conducted major archaeological and experimental research, and developed and implemented comprehensive, diverse programmes of community engagement and capacity building activities, in addition to site management strategies. More recently she was Co-Investigator for Cambridge University’s Mapping Africa’s Endangered Archaeological Sites and Monument’s project, and Co-led a major project to rehabilitate three museums in Sudan.
