About the lecture
The period between 1948 and 1967 is often characterised as one of marginalisation for Arab Jerusalem. This lecture challenges that view by presenting a counter-narrative grounded in oral histories, archival sources, contemporary newspapers and urban analysis.
By focusing on the Jerusalem Airport, Dr Nasasra highlights its central role in empowering local inhabitants and reconnecting the city to wider Arab urban, political and economic networks in the post-Nakba period. The airport acted as a catalyst for cosmopolitan street life, political engagement, urban transformation and new opportunities for personal and communal development, revealing Arab Jerusalem as a dynamic and interconnected metropolitan space.
About the speaker
Dr Nasasra is a senior lecturer of Middle East politics and International Relations. He is the author of “The Naqab Bedouins: A Century of Politics and Resistance, published by Columbia University Press, 2017; co-editor of the Routledge Handbook of Middle East cities, published by Routledge, 2020. He is currently finishing a book about Jerusalem with Edinburgh University Press.
