About the Lecture
This session introduces the core elements of ethnography and participatory research as tools for processing and analysing qualitative data. It covers how ethnography relies on close engagement, observation, and attention to everyday practice, and how participatory research involves shared decision making, co-produced questions, and collaborative interpretation. The session outlines practical steps for generating, organising, and analysing data within these approaches, including reflexive note-taking, iterative coding, and group analysis. Short examples will illustrate how these methods help researchers understand context, surface hidden dynamics, and produce grounded findings.
About the Speaker
Dr. Ghanem is an Assistant Professor in the Architectural Engineering Department at the Hashemite University in Jordan. Her work focuses on public space and refugee studies, using participatory and art-based feminist methods to explore how marginalised groups navigate and shape urban environments. She holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield, has co-led projects funded by the British Academy and the Council for British Research in the Levant, and has consulted for the International Institute for Environment and Development.
